I was having lunch with a dear friend this weekend & we were catching up on what's going in our lives, you know the usual - relationships, challenges, goals, what's up with work, etc. She shared with me some info about a project they're working on (she works in the educational system) & a statement her supervisor made, "It doesn't make sense, but we're going to do it anyway." We laughed & chatted for a few minutes about the pure absurdity of these words. But you know what, we hear this more often than we care to admit & have probably said it or thought it ourselves on many occasions.
For me it brings to mind, perceiving something with the senses; being or becoming aware of something. So, when something "doesn't make sense," that suggests that our senses aren't on board. So why go ahead & do it anyway?
I'm guilty. I suppose we all do because there are times when it's just easier to do so. In our gut we know it "doesn't make sense" but we plow ahead & feel the pain of ignoring our senses.
I have no desire to proceed this way anymore & here's why. First of all, I don't enjoy pain & I don't enjoy unnecessary problems. Furthermore, every time we ignore our senses, which help us make connections in the world, they get dull through lack of use - failing to acknowledge & act accordingly.
An approach where we pause & consider, 'why doesn't this make sense,' makes more sense, right? When we "do it anyway" after our senses are clearly warning us, can we really complain when we get stuck or experience problems? Nope.
MY INTENTION IS TO EXPERIENCE A LIFE OF FLOW AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE, WHICH MEANS GIVING OUR SENSES THEIR PROPS.
Our senses are great informants! They constantly provide guidance & direction to assist in intentional living. The more we ignore them though, & "do it anyway" the harder it is to decipher how to proceed successfully.
Examples: staying in a job where you are clearly miserable doesn't make sense, but you stay anyway; staying in a relationship that disrespects & devalues you as a person, but you stay anyway; engaging in eating habits that are clearly making you sick, but you do it anyway; making purchases that you can't afford & probably don't even want, but you're compelled to compete with your peers, but you purchase them anyway; engaging in some other habit that is clearly taking a toll on your well being, but you keep doing it anyway. etc. You get the point.
Doesn't it make sense to really listen to our senses when something "doesn't make sense," & then DON'T do it anyway? I know, it sounds easier than it is & there are a host of reasons why its so difficult to not do it anyway, but if we want to experience happy & peaceful lives, we've got to make some adjustments, sooner, not later.
WHY WOULD SOMETHING NOT MAKE SENSE & WE DO IT ANYWAY?
POINTS TO PONDER: What are you doing that doesn't
make sense, but you're doing it anyway?
Isn't it time to do something that does?
One thing we can do is practice awareness. The simple act of learning to pause & listen to what our senses have to say, particularly to what is often referred to as our sixth sense, intuition. And, we can only listen when we're still & quiet. Otherwise, all of the noise around us can drown out our most valuable guide. Again, it takes practice because this is not easy, especially when we consider our noisy culture. It has to intentional.
Then, we can ask ourselves, why doesn't this make sense? What information am I ignoring here? Is there another direction that's aligned with my senses that makes sense? If I can't shift in that direction right now, what small step can I take to begin moving in that direction? Why do I proceed anyway when something doesn't make sense? Am I afraid of something? If yes, what am I afraid of & why? Just drop into questioning mode & continue with the inquiry until you gain more clarity around how to proceed.
